The History of Kids Club

The Waverly United Methodist Children’s Club was organized in the early 1970’s. Rev. Max Marble was a young pastor with lots of neat ideas. Donnis and Greg Prather, along with Sally and Max Marble organized this activity for the elementary youth. They met twice a month after school on Wednesday. Parents were involved preparing a snack and evening meal, and creating a craft project. Donnis Prather led the music time, and Max and Sally led the Bible study. It was during the music time that they prepared a special song for church services, and diligently worked on their special Christmas program. “I Am A Promise” became one of their very favorite songs.

Many people have worked to keep Children’s Club active over the years. Jeanie Peters remembers Children’s Club with John Yocum doing the Bible study. Diane Erdman recalls spending a day twice a month preparing for the club’s activities. She also recalls hay rides and wiener roasts at her farm. One particular hay ride was inside a cattle trailer. The kids started throwing the hay around. Needless to say, the adults couldn't’t wait to get out! For a few years Leslie Utlaut and Diane worked together. During this time we made treats to take to the nursing home. One treat everyone remembers were hamburger cookies made from chocolate mint cookies and green coconut. Later, Carolyn Campbell and Leslie worked together. The Richard Blackmon’s were involved during their time in Waverly.

Kathy Hollingsworth & Nancy Peters whose kids were in Children's Club teamed up in 1997-2003 continuing the fun, fellowship, food, crafts, and activities over those years.

The present Children’s Club was re-organized in 2005. Our group includes kids from kindergarten to sixth grade. We start with a light and healthy dinner. The rest of our two hours includes games, crafts, and a Bible lesson. One of our highlights each year is a trip to The Garden Cart where we get to tour the buildings and plant some plants to take home. When Pastor Karen Coy arrived in Waverly she was very interested in Children’s Club. The name was changed to Kids’ Club, and the format remained about the same with more emphasis on the Bible lesson. Many parents, grandparents, and other church members generously volunteer their time and talents to help us keep the club going.

Amanda Riley and Pastor Matt Riley were leaders of Kid's Club for 2 years.
